365 A Daily Creativity Journal – Day 33

Passion is the key to a good life.

It is, you know. When you feel enthused, inflamed, inspired, excited and passionate… about anything. Anything at all, whether it be another person, art or collecting thimbles. If it sets your heart beating and the blood racing, then you are feeling the life force pulsating through.

My girl doesn’t look too enthused, but inside she is burning with desire for the chocolate cake she has just spotted on the other side of the room. If she doesn’t get some very soon she is going to explode! Under that cook exterior throbs a deep desire for chocolate.

The page was created with reverse stenciling. Paint a background (or not) and let it dry. Cover with a coat of undiluted acrylic. Use two or more colours if you prefer. Lay down a stencil and simply dab through it with a babywipe to remove the paint and reveal the undercoat. I added clear gesso, drew straight on top with coloured pencil and collaged the dress and headdress.

365 A Daily Creativity Journal – Day 27

Recycle

Another quick recap if you just landed on this page. This blog is (currently) assigned to a project inspired by the book, 365: A Daily Creativity Journal. Mostly my daily postings are of my attempts to alter the book, from a commercial, prompt journal to an experimental art journal. It’s where I try out new materials and supplies and where I make mistakes. It’s not pretty. Sometimes, my creative endeavors take place away from the book so I post them instead. Today I made bread… but that doesn’t count, does it?

I’m not sure whether this is just a background or if I will leave it as is. It is a simple torn collage of printouts of old journal pages. I’ll let it dry and see. I often print out previous pages and tear them into strips for borders or cut out an element that I know will be just perfect for a new page. Using your own artwork like this is much better than using other people’s. I’ve never seen the appeal of purchasing commercial collage sheets, although I do have some in my stash of papers that were included in kits that I bought a few years ago. Kits… why? It’s so much more fun to build your own treasure trove of resources.

Here, there are scans of collages, watercolors, rubber stamps, drawings by my daughter, buttons and journal entries.

Textures and Tangles

Apologies for not posting for a couple of days. Creativity continues regardless.

I carried on with with my dryer sheet collages, this time using a brighter color combination. Here are some close-ups.

I love the chalky, scrunched up textures of torn paper, kitchen paper, tissue, netting, etc. The paint is diluted acrylic (Pip Seymour Fine Acrylics).

It’s Mother’s Day, or, more correctly Mothering Sunday here in the UK so I made a Zentangled card for mine.

365 A Daily Creativity Journal – Day 23

Reinventing Myself Every Day

I managed to finish (they are never really finished) the journal page that was started yesterday. Pages were gessoed, then an acrylic glaze applied. There was some transparency, which I like because the original text and printing shows through. I like altering books but I also like their original character to show through now and then – it’s not an exercise in obliteration. Then collage, using one of my girl portraits and fabric paper. Rubber stamp alpha and text added in markers and pen. A little wax crayon to lift the borders. Done.

If you are interested in the colored Zentangles I did, I also made this Squidoo page today: Zentangle With Color

365 A Daily Creativity Journal – Day 21 & 22

I’m forever drawing bubbles…

Spent the weekend drawing colored Zentangles, like so:

Taken an age to upload this – wifi is terrible this weekend. Again this was drawn with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen and color was added with Derwent Inktense and Studio crayons.

I’ve been working in The Book this evening but have had to wait hours for an acrylic glaze to dry. Using a hairdryer had no effect whatsoever. The page isn’t finished yet for that reason but I will post a progress pic so you can see that creating has been done. I printed one of ‘my girls’ and made use of the sticky acrylic to adhere her. Made her a t-shirt from a small piece of fabric paper. Added some more fabric paper border I intend to add some text tomorrow. If it’s dry.

365 A Daily Creativity Journal – Day 13

Girl, Girl, Girl

Now don’t think because I don’t post that there’s no creating going on… it is probably because there is nothing presentable to share. Over the past few days I have been immersing myself in Suzi Blu’s portrait course: The Goddess and the Poet. I mentioned before that I wanted to learn how to draw faces – all kinds of faces. These three were my first attempts using colored pencil. They have been scanned, shrunk and printed so have lost some of their original lustre. Never mind, they make good journal page fodder.

I placed them on the previously made backgrounds I showed you a few posts back. On one page, I journaled a few random thoughts and on the other I placed a seahorse stamp and rubbed in some extra color with Neocolor lls. I think will probably do more to this page at some time – especially when there are more days left than pages!

365 A Daily Creativity Journal – Day Nine

Dream Catcher

Today’s offering – layered collage. Scraps of fabric, handmade paper and ribbon were adhered to the page, then painted over with acrylic medium. I added a layer of white tissue and allowed the page to dry thoroughly. I tried to leave the word. “Source” from the original page heading to show through. A little bit of rubber stamping and some white pastel scraped over sequin waste provided the next layer. Then I glued on the girl, the butterfly and the printed words in Dymo font, charcoaled around the edges of the collage and finally sprinkled the page with some talcum powder, which takes care of any sticky bits.

Make an Art Journal from Scratch

Take some paper, fold it, sew it, splash some watercolor on it, collage it, crayon it, ‘zendoodle’ a border,  add some thoughts or a pithy quote or two. There. You have your art journal. Okay, okay, you wanted more than that, otherwise you wouldn’t be here.

I made a Squidoo lens (page) all about creating an art journal from scratch. It includes Teesha Moore’s useful video which shows you how to make the black journal from a singe piece of 22×30″ watercolor paper. There are links to other art journal pages too, including a step-by-step ‘Create a Journal Page’.

If I was asked to give one word of advice of how to go about beginning an art journal (yes, I know I haven’t been asked but I’m going to give it any way), it would be ‘experiment’. Don’t worry about how it’s going to look when finished. It’s about giving yourself permission to be free. It’s not an art class; it’s a playground.
